The circulation of arboviruses throughout the world and the maintenance of lymphatic filariasis endemicity in tropical countries, combined with the lack of vaccines and specific treatments, highlight the importance of reducing the populations of mosquitoes involved in the transmission of these pathogens, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. To contribute to the development of new strategies for monitoring and controlling these culicids, we evaluated the performance of the Double BR-OVT trap individually and in pairs, in the field. After 18 months, the Double BR-OVT traps captured a mean of 3.5 ± 7.4 and 1.8 ± 3.2 of Culex and Aedes /residence/cycle, respectively, in addition to 410 ± 588.3 Aedes eggs/residence/cycle. When installed in pairs, the Double BR-OVT traps collected three times more adult mosquitoes of C. quinquefasciatus (9.4 ± 8.3 Culex /residence/bimester) and two times more Aedes spp. (3 ± 3.2 Aedes /residence/bimester) in comparison with the traps installed individually (2.6 ± 7.1 and 1.5 ± 3.2 Culex and Aedes /residence/bimester, respectively) (p < 0.05). The Double BR-OVT trap has an exceptional advantage: it aggregates different functionalities into a single instrument, as this type of trap can concomitantly collect eggs and adult mosquitoes of C. quinquefasciatus and A. aegypti , a feature that makes it a potentially useful tool among the strategies for monitoring and controlling these mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are the most important arbovirus vectors in the world. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate and compare the infestation pattern of these species in a neighbourhood of Recife, Brazil, endemic for arboviruses in 2005 (T1) and 2013 (T2). METHODS Infestation, distribution and relative abundance of these sympatric species were recorded by egg collection using a network of 59 sentinel ovitraps (s-ovt) at fixed sampling stations for 12 months in T1 and T2. FINDINGS A permanent occupation pattern was detected which was characterised by the presence of egg-laying females of one or both species with a high ovitrap positivity index (94.3 to 100%) throughout both years analysed. In terms of abundance, the total of eggs collected was lower (p < 0.005) in T2 (146,153) than in T1 (281,103), although ovitraps still displayed a high index of positivity. The spatial distribution showed the presence of both species in 65.1% of the 148 s-ovt assessed, while a smaller number of traps exclusively contained Ae. aegypti (22%) or Ae. albopictus (13.2%) eggs. MAIN CONCLUSIONS Our comparative analysis demonstrated the robustness of the spatial occupation and permanence of Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus populations in this endemic urban area.

INTRODUCTION: Culex quinquefasciatus is a mosquito of importance to public health, as it represents a real and/or potential risk for the transmission of pathogens to humans, such as some arthropod-borne viruses and nematodes that cause filariasis. In Brazil, three municipalities in the Metropolitan Region of Recife (RMR) that are endemic for lymphatic filariasis conducted control actions targeting this vector. With the goal of contributing novel C. quinquefasciatus collection strategies, a sticky trap capable of collecting eggs and imprisoning mosquitoes was investigated. METHODS: To evaluate the performance of the sticky BR-OVT trap, tests were carried out in the neighborhoods of Caixa d'Água and Passarinho (Olinda-PE-Brasil) between August 2011 and June 2012. Sixty traps were installed in the indoor areas of residences in the two districts. RESULTS: During the 11-month study, 0.52 [standard deviation (SD) = 1.52] Culex egg rafts, 2.16 (SD = 4.78) C. quinquefasciatus/trap/month, and 0.55 (SD = 1.28) Aedes/trap/month were caught. Female specimens predominated the traps (59% of C. quinquefasciatus and 96% of Aedes spp.). CONCLUSIONS: The results demonstrated that the sticky BR-OVT trap is a useful tool for the collection of adult culicids of medical importance and offers an innovative way to collect C. quinquefasciatus eggs and adults in a single trap.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are two highly invasive mosquito species, both vectors of several viruses, including dengue, chikungunya and Zika. While Ae. aegypti is the primary vector in the tropics and sub-tropics, Ae. albopictus is increasingly under the public health watch as it has been implicated in arbovirus-transmission in more temperate regions, including continental Europe. Vector control using insecticides is the pillar of most control programmes; hence development of insecticide resistance is of great concern. As part of a Brazilian-Swiss Joint Research Programme we set out to assess whether there are any signs of existing or incipient insecticide resistance primarily against the larvicide Bacillus thuringiensis svar. israelensis (Bti), but also against currently applied and potentially alternative insecticides in our areas, Recife (Brazil) and the Swiss-Italian border region. METHODS: Following World Health Organization guidelines, dose-response curves for a range of insecticides were established for both colonized and field caught Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus. The larvicides included Bti, two of its toxins, Cry11Aa and Cry4Ba, Lysinibacillus sphaericus, Vectomax CG®, a formulated combination of Bti and L. sphaericus, and diflubenzuron. In addition to the larvicides, the Swiss-Italian Ae. albopictus populations were also tested against five adulticides (bendiocarb, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, malathion, permethrin and λ-cyhalothrin). RESULTS: Showing a similar dose-response, all mosquito populations were fully susceptible to the larvicides tested and, in particular, to Bti which is currently used both in Brazil and Switzerland. In addition, there were no signs of incipient resistance against Bti as larvae were equally susceptible to the individual toxins, Cry11Aa and Cry4Ba. The field-caught Swiss-Italian populations were susceptible to the adulticides tested but DDT mortality rates showed signs of reduced susceptibility. CONCLUSIONS: The insecticides currently used for mosquito control in Switzerland and Brazil are still effective against the target populations. The present study provides an important reference as relatively few insecticide susceptibility surveys have been carried out with Ae. albopictus.

Duas tecnologias alternativas para o controle de Aedes aegypti foram avaliadas: a aplicação espacial de larvicida biológico-Bti em potenciais criadouros peridomiciliares, e a liberação de machos estéreis para inviabilização reprodutiva das fêmeas do mosquito. As ações foram realizadas pelos Agentes dos Serviços de Saúde em 15 vilas da Ilha de Fernando de Noronha, e em uma área (900 imóveis) no bairro da Várzea/Recife/Pernambuco. A efetividade dos métodos foi avaliada por indicadores entomológicos,estimados pela presença, quantidade e viabilidade de ovos do mosquito, coletados em armadilhas, e por marcadores genéticos. A aplicação de Bti, com atomizador costal, ocorreu a cada 30 dias em ambas as áreas. Uma redução importante e sustentável da população de A. aegypti,por este método, foi alcançada em 2015/2016 na Várzea e, em 2016, na Ilha, onde a remoção de 18 toneladas de resíduos sólidos em 2015 contribuiu possivelmente para os resultados. Machos esterilizados com radiação gama foram produzidos em massa no laboratório e liberados em uma das vilas da Ilha. A análise espaço-temporal dos indicadores, de dez/2015a ago/2016, revelou redução expressiva da densidade populacional do mosquito e da diversidade genética da população local. Ambas as abordagens parecem ter reduzido o contato homem-vetor e os riscos de transmissão de arboviroses na Ilha, apesar da elevada competência vetorial da população local do mosquito para os vírus Zika e Dengue. Os métodos testados se mostraram eficientes e passíveis de serem integradas às ações do SUS voltadas ao controle de A. aegypti.


Two alternative technologies were evaluated for Aedes aegypti control:the spraying of a biological larvicide (Bti) in potential peridomiciliarybreeding sites and the release of sterile males to promote reproductionblockage in wild females. Actions were carried out by Agents of theHealth Services, in 15 villages of the Fernando de Noronha Island and in 900 properties from the district of Várzea, Recife-PE. The effectiveness of both methods was evaluated by entomological indicators, estimatedby the presence, quantity and viability of eggs from the mosquito collectedin traps and through genetic markers. Bti was delivered by backpacksprayer every 30 days in both areas. A significant and sustainablereduction of the A. aegypti population as a result of this technique wasachieved in 2015/2016 in Várzea and in 2016 in the Island, where it wasstrengthened by the removal of 18 tons of solid waste in 2015. Malessterilized with gamma radiation were mass-produced in the laboratoryand released in one village of the Island. The spatiotemporal analysis ofthe indicators, from Dec/2015 to Aug/2016, revealed a significant reductionin mosquito density, which impacted on the genetic diversity of thelocal population. Both approaches seem to have reduced human-vectorcontact and the risk of arbovirus transmission in the Island, althoughlocal mosquito population presented high vector competence to Zikaand Dengue virus. These methods were efficient and could be integratedinto SUS actions directed to A. aegypti control.

Aedes aegypti has played a major role in the dramatic expansion of dengue worldwide. The failure of control programs in reducing the rhythm of global dengue expansion through vector control suggests the need for studies to support more appropriated control strategies. We report here the results of a longitudinal study on Ae. aegypti population dynamics through continuous egg sampling aiming to characterize the infestation of urban areas of a Brazilian oceanic island, Fernando de Noronha. The spatial and temporal distribution of the dengue vector population in urban areas of the island was described using a monitoring system (SMCP-Aedes) based on a 103-trap network for Aedes egg sampling, using GIS and spatial statistics analysis tools. Mean egg densities were estimated over a 29-month period starting in 2011 and producing monthly maps of mosquito abundance. The system detected continuous Ae. aegypti oviposition in most traps. The high global positive ovitrap index (POI=83.7% of 2815 events) indicated the frequent presence of blood-fed-egg laying females at every sampling station. Egg density (eggs/ovitrap/month) reached peak values of 297.3 (0 - 2020) in May and 295 (0 - 2140) in August 2012. The presence of a stable Ae. aegypti population established throughout the inhabited areas of the island was demonstrated. A strong association between egg abundance and rainfall with a 2-month lag was observed, which combined with a first-order autocorrelation observed in the series of egg counts can provide an important forecasting tool. This first description of the characteristics of the island infestation by the dengue vector provides baseline information to analyze relationships between the spatial distribution of the vector and dengue cases, and to the development of integrated vector control strategies.

INTRODUCTION: The present study shows the colonization of Aedes mosquitoes in breeding sites specific for Culex quinquefasciatus in neighborhoods in the municipality of Olinda. METHODS: Samples were collected between May 2011 and June 2012 from breeding sites positive for Cx. quinquefasciatus by using a ladle and manual suction pump. RESULTS: Aedes aegypti (0.12%), Aedes albopictus (0.03%), and Cx. quinquefasciatus (99.8%) were found across the breeding sites. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of Aedes ssp. in several Cx. quinquefasciatus breeding sites with a heavy load of organic material demonstrates the need to review the concepts and methods used for treatment, as the use of specific larvicide for breeding sites of Culex.

OBJECTIVE: Analyse how basic sanitation conditions, water supply and housing conditions affect the concentration of Culex quinquefasciatus METHODS: Populations of C. quinquefasciatus in 61 houses in the municipality of Olinda, PE, were monitored between October 2009 and October 2010. Observations were carried out in homes without the presence of preferred breeding sites in order to identify characteristics that may be aggravating factors for the development of the mosquito. Five aggravating factors were analysed: vegetation cover surrounding the home, number of residents/home, water storage, sewage drainage and water drainage. These characteristics were analysed in terms of presence or absence and as indicators of the degree of infestation, which was estimated through monitoring the concentration of eggs (oviposition traps - BR-OVT) and adults (CDC light traps). RESULTS: Sewage drainage to a rudimentary septic tank or to the open air was the most frequent aggravating factor in the homes (91.8%), although the presence of vegetation was the only characteristic that significantly influenced the increase in the number of egg rafts (p = 0.02). The BR-OVT achieved positive results in 95.1% of the evaluations, with the presence of at least one egg raft per month. A total of 2,366 adults were caught, with a mosquito/room/night ratio of 32.9. No significant difference was found in the number of mosquitoes caught in the homes. CONCLUSIONS: Although the sanitation and water supply influence the population density of C. quinquefasciatus, residence features that are not usually considered in control measures can be aggravating factors in sustaining the mosquito population.


OBJETIVO: Analisar como as condições de saneamento básico, abastecimento de água e habitações afetam a densidade de Culex quinquefasciatus. MÉTODOS: Monitorou-se a população de C. quinquefasciatus em 61 residências do município de Olinda, PE, de outubro de 2009 a outubro de 2010. As observações foram realizadas em residências sem a presença de criadouros preferenciais, para identificar características que contribuíssem como agravantes para o desenvolvimento do mosquito. Cinco características agravantes foram analisadas: cobertura vegetal no peridomicílio, número de moradores por residência, armazenamento de água, escoamento de esgoto, escoamento de água. Essas características foram avaliadas quanto à presença ou ausência e como indicadores de níveis de infestação, estimados por monitoramento da densidade de ovos (armadilhas de oviposição BR-OVT) e adultos (armadilhas luminosas do tipo CDC). RESULTADOS: O escoamento de esgoto para fossa séptica/rudimentar e a céu aberto foi o mais frequente nas residências (91,8%), embora apenas a presença de vegetação tenha influenciado significativamente no aumento de jangadas (p = 0,02). As BR-OVT apresentaram-se positivas em 95,1% das avaliações, com presença de pelo menos uma jangada/mês. Foram capturados 2.366 espécimes adultos, com relação mosquito/quarto/noite de 32,9, sem diferença significativa no número de mosquitos capturados nas residências. CONCLUSÕES: Embora as condições de saneamento e de abastecimento de água influenciem na densidade populacional de C. quinquefasciatus, características da residência que normalmente não são consideradas nas medidas de controle podem ser fatores agravantes na manutenção da população de mosquito.

The use of attractants and larvicides in oviposition traps is of practical interest for the surveillance and control of urban mosquitoes. In addition to increasing the safety of the traps, this combination is essential for an attract-and-kill control strategy based on trapping mosquito eggs. The combination of Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis (Bti) and grass infusion (GI) vs. GI alone were tested for their ability to attract in paired BR-OVT traps in the backyards of 10 houses in Recife, Brazil, for a period of 45 days. Results show that females prefer to oviposit in traps containing Bti (363 compared with 251 egg rafts over 45 days). Results from a one-year trial on the efficacy of BR-OVT traps loaded with GI and Bti as a sampling tool to monitor temporal fluctuations in the population densities of Culex quinquefasciatus in an urban environment are also reported. From December 2006-January 2007, one trap per home was installed and maintained for 348 consecutive days in 134-151 houses located in three urban blocks. Throughout the one-year field trial a total of 43,151 Culex egg rafts were collected in the traps. The data show that BR-OVT loaded with GI and Bti is sensitive enough to demonstrate continuous reproductive activity of Cux. quinquefasciatus in the study area throughout the year and to monitor temporal fluctuations in population density.

A armadilha de oviposição BR-OVT foi desenvolvida com base na soma de estímulos físicos e químicos para atração de fêmeas grávidas de Culex quinquefasciatus Say, 1823 (Diptera: Culicidae), uma espécie de grande importância epidemiológica, envolvida na transmissão da Wuchereria bancrofti e de vários arbovirus. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar atraentes e larvicidas para melhorar o desempenho da armadilha, bem como testar a eficiência da armadilha para uso na coleta de dados entomológicos de Cx. quinquefasciatus. Para otimizar o uso da BR-OVT e avaliar a sua competitividade frente aos principais tipos de criadouros no Recife, foram realizados testes em laboratório e a campo. Em laboratório, foram realizados bioensaios em câmara de escolha, com Bacillus sphaericus (Bs), B. thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) e atraente de oviposição (J1), para verificar se a presença destes produtos interfere na escolha de sítios de oviposição. Estes materiais foram comparados à infusão de gramínea, um atraente comumente utilizado em armadilhas para atrair fêmeas grávidas de mosquitos. Os bioensaios foram conduzidos em gaiola de 100 x 80 x 70 cm, utilizando 50 a 100 fêmeas grávidas por ensaio, com pelo menos 6 repetições. Em campo, armadilhas com diferentes tratamentos foram instaladas no interior ou na área externa de residências localizadas em bairros do Recife, por períodos de 20, 30, 80 ou 348 dias. O número de armadilhas por experimento variou de 11 a 180. Os resultados dos experimentos em laboratório e a campo mostraram que as bactérias entomopatógenas Bs e Bti são atraentes de oviposição para fêmeas de Cx. quinquefasciatus; e quando adicionados à infusão de gramínea não alteram a atratividade da armadilha; que o J1, associado ao Bti, é um bom atraente de oviposição para Culex, com potencial para substituir a infusão de gramínea em armadilhas; a avaliação a campo demonstrou que a BR-OVT é um instrumento eficiente para coleta de amostras populacionais de Cx. quinquefasciatus, com sensibilidade para indicar variações na densidade, além de ser um instrumento de fácil construção e manejo, que dispensa o uso de energia elétrica e tem boa aceitação pelo público.
